Designing for 3D Printing

​These are some of the main points to keep in mind:

  • Expect slightly rounded corners
  • Complexity is "free", make use of it
  • Assemble rather than print all at once
  • Chamfer/Fillet edges to reduce stress points
  • Round corners to reduce warping
  • Optimize orientation for strength
  • The 45 degree rule
  • Design custom supports to reduce surface scaring
  • Use chamfer to produce cleaner bottom edges
  • A trick to create better looking top surfaces
  • Always try to design thin walls to be multiples of your nozzle size
